How many streams
for a Spotify plaque?
There is no number, because Spotify does not give plaques to musicians at all. The plaque you are picturing is almost certainly an RIAA certification, and for a single that is 75 million US streams for Gold and 150 million for Platinum — and even then the RIAA does not send it to you. You apply and pay for it.
Three different things people mean
This question has a confusing answer because three separate things get called "a Spotify plaque".
- A Spotify award for musicians. Does not exist. No programme, no thresholds, no application.
- Spotify Creator Milestone Awards. Real, but podcasts only — launched in January 2025 and awarded quarterly.
- An RIAA certification. The gold or platinum record you are actually thinking of. Nothing to do with Spotify — it counts US sales and streams across all services.

Recipients get a physical plaque plus on-platform editorial placement. Awarded quarterly. If you make music rather than podcasts, this programme is not open to you.
RIAA certification — the real numbers
The RIAA counts 150 on-demand streams as one unit for a single, and 1,500 streams as one album unit. Applied to the certification levels:

Four caveats, or those numbers mislead:
- US streams only. Global numbers on your dashboard are not what gets counted.
- Downloads and streams pool into the same unit count, so almost no real certification is pure streaming.
- Official label videos count; user-generated content does not.
- Streams must come from services authorised by and reported to the labels.
The mistake nearly every article makes
You will read that paid streams count more than ad-supported ones. That is not true of RIAA certification — the RIAA explicitly accepts subscription and ad-supported on-demand streams identically, at a flat 150 to 1.
The weighting people are remembering is Billboard's, which is a chart system, not a certification system. Billboard does weight them — and it changed on 17 January 2026, from 1,250 paid / 3,750 ad-supported per album unit to 1,000 paid / 2,500 ad-supported. So one subscription stream is now worth 2.5 ad-supported streams rather than 3. Certifications and charts are two different scoreboards.
Nobody sends you the plaque
This is the part that catches people out. RIAA certification is applicant-initiated and paid for. A request costs $350 per certification for member companies and $450 per level for non-members, prepaid. An independent auditor verifies it against sales-system reports and label copy. Requests that fail the criteria are still charged in full. And the physical plaque is manufactured separately from the certification itself.

What to do if you are nowhere near 75 million
Almost everyone is nowhere near 75 million, and that is rather the point. Your first 100,000 streams, your first 1 million, a playlist add, a first month of royalties that covered rent — none of those get a plaque from anybody, and all of them meant something at the time.

Does Spotify give plaques to musicians?
No. Spotify has no streaming-milestone award programme for musicians. It does give physical plaques to podcasters through the Creator Milestone Awards, and it hands out discretionary one-off awards such as Billions Club pieces, but there is no programme a musician can qualify for or apply to.
How many streams is a Gold single?
75 million on-demand US streams. Gold is 500,000 units and the RIAA counts 150 on-demand streams as one unit for a single, so 500,000 x 150 = 75,000,000.
How many streams is a Platinum single?
150 million on-demand US streams — 1,000,000 units at 150 streams per unit.
Do paid and free streams count differently?
Not for RIAA certification. The RIAA accepts subscription and ad-supported on-demand streams identically. Billboard is what weights them differently for chart purposes, and that is a separate system.
Does the RIAA just send you a plaque when you hit the number?
No. Certification is applicant-initiated and paid for. A request costs $350 per certification for RIAA member companies and $450 per level for non-members, it is audited by an independent third party, and failed requests are still charged. Plaque manufacturing is separate from the certification fee.
So can an independent artist get certified?
Yes in principle — the non-member fee tier exists for exactly that — but you have to produce label-grade documentation, including sales reports from a sales system and label copy for every ISRC. In practice it is the rights holder who files.
